Course Description

This course is designed to improve students’ ability to communicate in English and understand spoken English.

 

The course provides some fundamental guides to listening and conversation, as well as presentation and grammar skill. In-class practice will be provided, and active participation is highly required and appreciated.

The class will be lectured in both English and Chinese. Code switching depends on the situation.

Teaching

30% Attendance

Students need to come to each class session. There will not be roll call every time, but do not take any chances.

20% Attitudes and participation

There will be in-class discussion every time, and the activeness of engagement will be taken into account.

20% Topic Presentation

Each student needs to select ONE topic and do a presentation accordingly. Each talk will last no less than 15 minutes, and no more than 25 minutes.

30% Exams

  • 10% Pop quiz

  • 10% Mid-term exam

  • 10% Final project

  • Students that do not have the chance to speak English in their daily life
     

  • Students that are willing to improve English listening and speaking ability
     

  • Students that are interested in Australian accent (while the teacher is not as handsome as Hugh Jackman)
     

  • Students that need credits and do not loathe English

  • There will be a movie day each semester. Welcome to recommend your favorite movie to the teacher in the beginning of the semester
    (English spoken movie only)

     

  • If you are not the student enrolled in this course, you are still welcomed in the office if there is any English question :) (Or any problem in life!)
